It was announced earlier this week that former President Jimmy Carter has entered hospice care. But just what is hospice care and how it can provide comfort and support?
Hospice care is for people who are nearing the end of life. The services are provided by a team of health care professionals who maximize comfort for a person who is terminally ill by reducing pain and addressing physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs. To help families, hospice care also provides counseling, respite care and practical support.
Unlike other medical care, the focus of hospice care isn't to cure the underlying disease. The goal is to support the highest quality of life possible for whatever time remains.
Dr Herrera is board certified in Internal medicine and a graduate of ,Harvard Medical school. He has 19 years experience in hospice care. His philosophy is to provide comfort care, reduce anxiety and give family education. He enjoys teaching the nurses about the principles of hospice care. He explains to patients and families about the advantages of hospice care
We help decrease anxiety by family education using comforting words to calm the patients. If the family has a routine in the morning like: change into comfortable clothes, drink water, listen to music then eat breakfast, this can calm the patient. Other activities that can relax the patients are looking at photo albums, range of motion exercises while sitting on the living room couch.
We hire nurse who are compassionate , knowledgeable, and very good and patient examination. They form a nursing plan to reduce anxiety, increase the quality of life and prevent complications.
The patient must have a serious illness like Alzheimer's, cancer or severe heart condition. Many patients have trouble walking and thinking. We will review the medical records and see if you qualify
We provide respite care for families who need a break from caregiving where the patient is admitted to nursing facility for 24 hours care for several days
We understand that social workers, case managers and hospitals need rapid evaluations for hospice qualifications so that plans for medical care can be completed. We are able to make evaluation in 1-2 hours after receiving the medical data.
Please reach us at if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Hospice care is a type of care that focuses on the quality of life for individuals who are experiencing advanced illness. Its goal is to provide comfort and support for the patient and their family, rather than a cure for the illness.
Hospice care is available to individuals who have been diagnosed with a life-limiting illness and have a life expectancy of six months or less. This includes individuals with cancer, heart disease, lung disease, and other terminal illnesses.
Hospice care provides a range of services, including pain and symptom management, emotional and spiritual support, medication management, medical equipment and supplies, and bereavement support for the patient and their family.
